Brutalism in Ukraine

Ukraine holds some of the most inventive late Soviet modernism, built from the 1960s to the 1980s when Kyiv institutes enjoyed unusual creative latitude. Avraam Miletsky designed the Hotel Salute (1984), a cylindrical tower whose truncated form resulted from budget cuts, and the memorial park complex above the Dnipro. In Crimea, Igor Vasilevsky's Druzhba Sanatorium (1985) cantilevers a toothed ring over the coast, reportedly mistaken by foreign observers for a launch site.

Sergey Mirgorodsky worked on major Kyiv public buildings of the era, part of a generation that fused concrete structure with mosaic and monumental art. Many of these buildings are now under threat, which has made Ukrainian modernism a focus of documentation efforts.
