Brutalism in Türkiye
1 brutalist building on the map · photos, architects and locations
Turkish architecture embraced reinforced concrete early, and by the 1970s Istanbul and Ankara had a substantial stock of expressive concrete offices, universities and cultural buildings. The Tercüman Office Building (1974) by Günay Çilingiroğlu and Muhlis Tunca, built for a major newspaper on the road into Istanbul, stacks sculptural cantilevered floors into one of the country's most recognisable brutalist silhouettes. Turkish brutalism grew out of a strong local engineering culture rather than direct imitation, and its landmarks are now the subject of growing documentation and preservation interest.
