Brutalism in Tunisia

Tunisia's independence decades brought ambitious modern architecture to Tunis, culminating in one of Africa's most photographed brutalist buildings: the Hôtel du Lac (1973) by the Italian architect Raffaele Contigiani. Its inverted pyramid form, widening floor by floor over eighteen months of construction, became an icon of the optimistic Bourguiba era and is often cited as an inspiration for imagined sci-fi structures. Long closed and repeatedly threatened with demolition, the hotel has become the focus of international preservation campaigns and stands for the wider fate of North African modernism.
