Brutalism in Tanzania

Tanzania's postcolonial decades produced a notable strand of African modernism, as the young socialist state built markets, universities, and public institutions in concrete. The standout is Kariakoo Market (1974) in Dar es Salaam by Beda Amuli, one of the first buildings in the country designed by a Tanzanian architect: its forest of flaring concrete canopies shades the trading floor, collects rainwater, and ventilates the halls without mechanical cooling, an intelligent tropical answer to brutalist form.
