Brutalism in Stuttgart

Stuttgart rebuilt itself after the war as a center of structural innovation, and its concrete architecture reflects the engineering culture of its technical university. Adolf Abel and Rolf Gutbrod designed the Liederhalle concert complex in 1956, an early landmark of organic postwar form whose asymmetrical halls are still praised for their acoustics. The university itself expanded with buildings like the Kollegiengebäude by Rolf Gutbier and Günter Wilhelm, while Hans Kammerer and Walter Belz shaped commercial architecture in the city center, including the Buchhaus Wittwer bookstore. Protestant church building added its own austere concrete sanctuaries in the surrounding districts during the 1960s, making Stuttgart a good place to trace West German modernism across civic, academic, and sacred commissions.
