Brutalism in Hannover

Hannover embraced large-scale concrete planning more thoroughly than most West German cities, pairing postwar reconstruction with car-oriented urbanism. Its most extreme product is the Ihme Zentrum, a vast 1970s megastructure combining housing, offices, and shopping on the banks of the Ihme river, still one of Germany's largest residential complexes. The city center received its own concrete landmarks in the same decade, including the Kröpcke-Center at Hannover's main crossroads and the Bredero Hochhaus tower at Lister Platz. Architects such as Heinz Wilke and the office of Bahlo, Köhnke, Stosberg shaped this era of confident, often controversial building. Even infrastructure like the Parkhaus Osterstraße shows the sculptural treatment concrete received here.
