Brutalism in Singapore

Singapore's brutalism is inseparable from its nation-building decades, when local architects sought a tropical, high-density alternative to imported modernism. The key work is the Golden Mile Complex (1973) by William Lim, Tay Kheng Soon and Gan Eng Oon of Design Partnership, a stepped megastructure on Beach Road that stacked shops, offices and apartments into a single terraced section facing the sea. Long threatened with redevelopment, it was gazetted for conservation in 2021, a rare protection for Asian brutalism, and stands alongside People's Park Complex as the built manifesto of the Singaporean megastructure idea.
