Brutalism in North Macedonia

Skopje owes its concrete character to catastrophe. After the 1963 earthquake destroyed much of the city, an international reconstruction effort guided by Kenzo Tange's master plan turned the Macedonian capital into one of the world's densest concentrations of brutalist architecture. Janko Konstantinov designed the sculptural Telecommunication Centre (1974) and central post office complex, while Georgi Konstantinovski, trained at Yale under Paul Rudolph, brought American brutalism home in works like the City Archive (1967).

The university campus by Marko Mušič added a monumental concrete acropolis of learning in 1974. Together these buildings made Skopje a pilgrimage site for admirers of the style.
