Brutalism in New Zealand

New Zealand's brutalism arrived through British-trained architects in the 1960s and found its strongest expression in Christchurch and Wellington. Peter Beaven, a champion of a regional South Island architecture, designed the Christchurch-Lyttleton Road Tunnel Administration Building (1964), while the firm Warren and Mahoney developed a recognizable local style of exposed concrete block and timber, culminating in the Christchurch Town Hall (1972).

In Wellington, James Beard's Hannah Playhouse (Downstage Theater) (1973) brought raw concrete to the theater. Earthquakes, especially in Canterbury in 2011, have since destroyed or endangered a number of the country's key concrete buildings.
