Brutalism in Montenegro

As part of socialist Yugoslavia, Montenegro shared in the federation's concrete modernism, rebuilding Podgorica, then Titograd, as an administrative center after wartime destruction. The republic's most striking contribution is memorial architecture: the Slovenian architect Marko Mušič designed the Kolašin Memorial Center (1976), a jagged concrete monument hall that fuses building and sculpture in the mountain landscape.

Alongside monuments came civic and university buildings of the 1960s and 1970s, including student housing in Podgorica, while Zvonimir Vrkljan represents the older generation of Yugoslav architects who shaped its institutions.
