Brutalism in Mauritius

Mauritius gained its most prominent modern civic architecture in the decade after independence in 1968, when the young state built new institutions in Port Louis. The Legislative Assembly and Government Center (1978) represents this moment, using concrete construction suited to the island's cyclone-prone tropical climate. As across much of the postcolonial world, modern architecture here carried the symbolism of a new national beginning, and these government buildings remain in daily use at the heart of the capital.
