Brutalism in Malaysia

Malaysia's early independence years brought a wave of tropical modernism, as British-founded firms and a new local profession adapted concrete architecture to the equatorial climate with deep shade, brise-soleil, and bold structure. A key monument is the Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya (1966) in Kuala Lumpur by Booty, Edwards & Partners, the university's great hall, whose sweeping concrete roof made it a symbol of the campus. The idiom prepared the ground for later Malaysian brutalist civic buildings of the 1960s and 1970s.
