Brutalism in Kenya

Nairobi acquired a significant stock of tropical modernist and brutalist buildings in the decade after independence in 1963, when the new nation used architecture to project confidence. The defining work is the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) (1973), designed by the Norwegian Karl Henrik Nøstvik with Kenyan architect David Mutiso, its concrete tower and amphitheater drawing on both modernist and vernacular forms.

The University of Nairobi campus also grew in this period, including the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Development, part of a broader East African adaptation of exposed concrete to a highland climate.
