Brutalism in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's dense postwar growth was built largely in concrete, from resettlement estates to schools and civic buildings, though little of it was framed as brutalism at the time. The territory's modern architecture of the 1960s to 1980s favored practical exposed concrete frames, sun-shading fins, and robust detailing suited to typhoons and humidity. The Special Room Block (1980) at St Stephen's College in Stanley is a characteristic example of this institutional concrete architecture, modest in scale but honest in material, from a campus whose buildings span a century of the territory's history.
