Brutalism in Greece

Greek postwar architecture was dominated by concrete frame construction, but expressive brutalism remained the work of a few individualists. Takis Zenetos, the most experimental Greek modernist, combined suspended structures and technological speculation in Athens buildings of the 1960s, including the FIX brewery that now houses the National Museum of Contemporary Art (1963), remodelled with Margaritis Apostolidis. Decades later Kyriakos Krokos designed the Museum of Byzantine Culture (1993) in Thessaloniki, an introverted brick and concrete complex that reconciled modern construction with Byzantine spatial tradition and is regarded as one of Greece's finest public buildings.
