Brutalism in Estonia

Soviet Estonia maintained close visual contact with Finnish architecture, and its late modernism was among the most refined in the USSR. The 1980 Moscow Olympics, whose sailing events were held in Tallinn, produced the Pirita ensemble including the Yacht Club (1980), a concrete complex by Avo-Himm Looveer, Henno Sepmann and Peep Jänes stepping toward the water. The same generation built Tallinn's linnahall and major cultural venues, giving Estonia a concentrated legacy of angular concrete public buildings that are now central to debates on preserving Soviet-era architecture in the Baltics.
