Brutalism in Denmark

Denmark absorbed brutalism cautiously, filtering raw concrete through a craft tradition that favored brick and careful detail. The clearest large-scale example is the Panum Building, Copenhagen University (1986), the sprawling medical faculty complex by Eva Koppel and Nils Koppel, whose long concrete and brick wings organize laboratories and lecture halls into a small academic city. The Koppels shaped much of Copenhagen's postwar institutional architecture, and their work shows the Danish preference for restraint even at brutalist scale.
