Brutalism in Croatia

3 brutalist buildings on the map · photos, architects and locations

Croatia's concrete heritage was built within socialist Yugoslavia, whose architecture drew on both Western modernism and its own experimental streak. Zagreb gained landmark high-rise housing such as the Zagrebačke Rakete (Richter's Skyscrapers) (1968) by Vjenceslav Richter, a member of the avant-garde EXAT 51 group, while on the coast the planned district of Split 3 (1982), designed with Vladimir Braco Mušič and Marjan Bežan, became one of Yugoslavia's most admired urban projects, weaving Mediterranean street life into large-scale concrete housing.

The country also holds some of the region's great memorial sculpture: Dušan Džamonja's Monument to the Revolution (1967) at Podgarić is among the most photographed of all Yugoslav spomeniks.
