Brutalism in Cambodia

Cambodia produced one of the most original modern movements of the postcolonial world, the New Khmer Architecture of the 1955 to 1970 Sangkum era. Its leading figure was Vann Molyvann, state architect under Sihanouk, who fused modernist concrete structure with Angkorian references and ingenious passive cooling. His public works transformed Phnom Penh, and buildings like the Teacher Training College (1972) show the movement's late phase before civil war and the Khmer Rouge halted it. Many works were lost or altered, and the surviving buildings are now the focus of preservation efforts.
