Brutalism in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina built intensively during the Yugoslav decades, and its cities retain strong concrete architecture despite wartime losses in the 1990s. Sarajevo modernized rapidly around the 1984 Winter Olympics, while Mostar gained the Shopping Mall "Razvitak" (1970) by Ante Paljaga, its facade patterned with reliefs drawn from the medieval stećak tombstones, a distinctly Bosnian fusion of brutalism and heritage.
Religious architecture joined the movement too: Miroslav Matasović designed the boldly modern Katedrala Sv. Bonaventuri (St. Bonaventure Cathedral) (1973) in Banja Luka, rebuilt after the 1969 earthquake destroyed its predecessor.
