Bangladesh is home to one of the greatest monumental concrete buildings of the twentieth century: the Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament House) (1982) in Dhaka, designed by Louis Kahn. Commissioned in the early 1960s and completed after the country's independence, its vast geometric openings and lake setting made it a national symbol and a pilgrimage site for architects worldwide. Kahn's work also seeded a strong local modernist tradition, with Bangladeshi architects continuing to build thoughtfully in brick and concrete for the delta climate.
