Brutalism in Austria

Austrian brutalism is concentrated in two places: Vienna's postwar social building programme and Graz, where a rebellious school of architects turned concrete into sculptural experiment. The most singular monument is the Church of the Holy Trinity (Wotrubakirche / Kirche zur Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit) (1976), composed by the sculptor Fritz Wotruba with architect Fritz Gerhard Mayr as a pile of 152 raw concrete blocks above Vienna.

In Graz, Werkgruppe Graz built the Terrassenhaussiedlung (1978), a participatory megastructure of stepped terraces that remains one of Europe's most consistent brutalist housing estates, while Günther Domenig and Eilfried Huth pushed toward expressive, almost organic concrete forms. Viktor Hufnagl brought the idiom to school building, part of a wider Austrian reform architecture of the 1970s that favoured exposed structure, top-lit halls and communal space.
